Description
Emperor Wenchang was originally Zhang Yu of the Eastern Jin Dynasty. After he died fighting against Qin, the people erected a temple to commemorate him. Due to the legend that he cut his thigh to treat his mother's filial piety and protect his literary fortune, it gradually became a belief during the Tang and Song dynasties. Emperor Renzong of the Yuan Dynasty conferred upon him the title of "Fu Yuan Kai Hua Wen Chang Si Lu Hong Ren Di Jun", in charge of fame, fortune, and position. He was also known as Kong Sheng, and the incense of Wen Chang Ge continued to flow throughout the country, becoming a spiritual support for scholars to pray for academic and official careers.
